Quick Guide: How to get started with celery juice?

So happy to see you here on this page! You made the decision to get started with celery juice and get rid of chronic illness at the same time. Or you are at least thinking about it. We could not be more excited. Now let’s dive into the details. It is actually critical to do this the right way to get the results you are looking for. So many people mix it up and do it the wrong way. So read this article, and get going!

To get started with celery juice all you really need is a juicer or even a blender. Juice or blend it, and then strain it. Drink the juice on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Then wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.

Don’t mix anything into the celery juice, drink it straight.

That was the basics, now let’s dive into the really important details that will make you get the most out of your celery juice.

Here’s a quick guide to getting started.

The hype

First of all, what is all the hype around celery juice? It seems like everyone is doing it. The list of celebrities on celery juice is so long, and it is all over social media from so many different influencers. The huge trend started with the book “Cleanse to heal” by Anthony William. Millions of people around the world claimed to have gotten rid of various diseases due to this herbal drink. In our experience here on Ridgetter.com, celery juice puts you on the fast track to getting rid of stubborn symptoms.

So let’s get started!

A highly anti-inflammatory herb

Celery is actually a herb and it is known in both western, Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used to treat illnesses like cold, flu, arthritis, poor digestion and numerous other illnesses throughout the ages. Celery was cultivated for medicinal purposes before 850 B.C and was considered holy in ancient Greece.

Can´t I just eat celery?

Juicing celery makes it possible to consume more of its active content AND lets the body absorb its nutrients much quicker. You  would (probably) not eat a whole celery each day.. But drinking the juice from it only takes a moment, and – in time – it can actually taste quite refreshing. Drinking the juice WITHOUT the pulp is a crucial part of it. If you eat celery with the pulp (the fiber) it does not have the same effect on the body, joints, stomach, brain and skin. Eating celery is great, but drinking the fresh juice of celery on an empty stomach is a totally different ballgame. Don´t believe us, see for yourself.

  • Preparation and tools

There is not much preparation that needs to be done. You need a juicer of some kind or a blender. Juicer is the better option, but both are adequate.

Juicing-option:

Whatever juicer will work just fine. Some may require you chopping the celery into smaller pieces.

Omega Juicers made several juicers especially for juicing celery. They are definitely the best ones.

Get the absolute best juicer for juicing celery here, or buy a used one a lot cheaper. Any juicer will do but Omega Juicers will squeeze more juice out of every stalk, saving you money with every drink.

You don’t have to cut the celery into pieces, and the juicer will squeeze every bit of juice out of the stalk giving you the most juice for your money every time. The Omega juicers are easy to use and cold-press the celery leaving the nutrients intact for your  body to enjoy. The Omega Juicer is what I personally use and you can read why I choose the Omega Juicer for juicing celery, but most juicers will do just fine. The important thing is to get started. Not everyone can afford (or have the space for) a machine like that. In that case, any juicer will do just fine. It does not have to be a slow juicer. Any celery juice is better than no celery juice. Which also leads us to the third best option:

Blending-option: If a blender is what you have, use it! In most blenders you’ll need to chop up the celery into smaller pieces. Run it until it is runny and then strain it.

A high speed blender will warm up the celery and juice and therefore you lose some of its benefits. Cold pressed is definitely best. That being said, blended juice is so much better than no juice. So go with whatever is possible for you. I sometimes use this options at friends’ houses, and it works just fine. Save up for an Omega celery juicer  when you see the benefits and you want the most celery juice for the bucks.

Strainer: For both options you need a fine mesh strainer. You can also use a tea strainer or a nutmilk bag / cheese cloth.

Buying the celery

  • Organic or not?

Celery can be heavily sprayed with pesticides. Therefore, buy the organic ones if you can access it and afford it. However, if you cannot, do not worry! Non organic celery is just fine. Just was it more thourougly with mild soap and water.

  • How much to buy?

Celery does well in the fridge, so you can easily buy bulk for one week at a time. Some places will give you a discount if you ask for is. Don’t be shy, you are gonna buy a lot of celery, so save the money that you can.

When buying the celery you might get some funny looks. Especially if you shop for the entire week. (Normally 1 stalk of celery per person per day, but they can vary greatly in size). Every once in a while people ask me what I do with all the celery and I gladly answer. More than rarely the cashier or someone in line answers “I know someone who does that! She got rid of … this and that disease!”

  • The fresher the better

Most of the juice is in the stems. So you want to look for celery with more stems and less leaves. (You can juice the leaves as well, but they have a more bitter taste, so many discard the leaves before juicing. The leaves are not important for the final product).

The taste will vary greatly from batch to batch, but in general the fresher velery will always taste better. Look at the cut (both at the top if they are gut at the top, and at the bottom). The less dark, the better. If the cuts are fresh they will still be green and sharp. After a while, the cut turns more brown. If you have the option, go for the ones that are cut most recently.

Also, if something doesn’t look right on the celery (brown spots, bruises etc, it might turn out all bad inside when you open it. So do some extra examinations.

Some stalks will have a brownish tint. We prefer to leave those out when juicing if you are sensitive to the taste.

3) Cutting and washing

Cutting

Optional: We prefer to cut half an inch (apx 1 cm) off the bottom of the celery to break the stems apart, and cut 2 inches (apx 0,5 cm) off the top as well. The celery may have been cut with a blade that had bacteria on it from livestock or other sources.

Trim the leaves if you want them, they have a more bitter taste. If you don´t mind the taste, you can keep the leaves on and juice them as well.

Washing

A thorough wash of each stalk is important to rinse off any dirt or pesticides. We use a dish bruch and scrub each stem. If we buy the non organic celery, we also use some mild dish soap to get pesticides off as much as possible. It really messes with the flavor if you don’t get the pesticides off. Sensitive people may not stand it at all.

We like to wash the celery the night before and let the stems dry (keeping them in the fridge overnight). If you wash them just before juicing (which is just as fine), dry them off before juicing. The juice is not meant to be mixed with water.

4) The taste

If you are into green juices, you might love it. If you are not into  green juices, you might love it as well. Read this chapter if you are curious or if you think the taste is unbearable. If this is not a concern for you, skip to chapter 5.

Tasty or not?

Most people does not drink celery juice for the taste. The taste will vary greatly from batch to batch, but your perception of the taste will also change a lot as time goes by. Some people love it from the start (salty and sweet), some people hate it (like drinking from the lawnmower). And everything in between.

Start slow

If you don’t like it, startout slow. Do one sip and get used to the taste if you don’t like it. Then a small glass. Then a larger glass. Hang in there, it will most certainly grow on you. And every sip of celery you drink is so beneficial for you. So even if you start out with only a very small amount, you are doing wonders for your body. Start with whatever feels comfortable for you.

The flavor will change

The longer you let the juice sit, the more the taste will change. For me the juice tasted better the first 5 minutes, so I would chug as much of it as possible really quickly. Others like to sip it and spend their time doing it.

Celery will also react with whatever else is in your mouth. What kind of bacteria, leftover toothpaste etc. This may also cause the taste to vary over time.

if you are using a cold press juicer, Experience with the stalks being room temperature or straight from the fridge. This will also change the flavor.

Pesticides

If you buy the non-organic celery you might be able to taste the residue of pesticides. For those who are sensitive, this taste can be unbearable. It helps so much to clean each stalk with mild soap and then rinse of with water and dry it. The organic celery often has a stronger taste, so well cleaned non organic celery might have the most palatable taste for sensitive people and children. There can also be lots of local variations, so start out with an open mind and test the different alternatives until you find what works better for you.

Mixing it up?

There are a lot of articles saying what to mix into the celery juice to make it taste better. Do not go that way. As beneficial as it is to make a green juice with celery and other stuff, save that for later in the day. In the morning, you want the clean celery juice with no lemon, no water, noe powders, no ice, no nothing. Celery juice alone is what is helping people get rid of chronic disease and feeling better. Mixing anything in there destroys the healing effect of pure celery juice on an empty stomach.

Leaves

The leaves have a more bitter taste, so cut them off before juicing if you want. The fresher celery will also taste so much better. Discard any stalk with a yellow/brownish tint and make sure you drink it right after juicing it.

  1. Reactions

Celery is highly anti-inflammatory. Which means that you might have different reactions after you start drinking it. Many people experience a clearer mind, less aches and pains and/or better skin after a couple of weeks.

However, it is not uncommon to experience nausea after drinking celery juice in the beginning. Don’t let that stop you. You can reduce the amount and go slow. After a while you might find the taste quite enjoyable (for some people right away, for others after months or even more).

Watch out for how you feel. It is a good idea to write down how you feel prior to starting with celery juice. And keep a log or write down every month or so how you feel. When we start to feel better, we normally do more. Which might give us the impression we are not feeling better after all. The new energy is spent without even thinking about it. And we might even do so much that we end up a bit worse, because we were able to push it further than before. So keeping a log of your symptoms is a good idea to stay motivated and clearly see the results.

  1. How to drink it?

Now, the most important part.

This is the make it – or break it – when it comes to drinking celery juice for health benefits.

  • Drink your celery juice on an empty stomach first thing in the morning

The celery juice works best if it is not mixed with any other food or drink in your stomach. To make sure of that, the best habit is to drink it first thing when you wake up. With an empty stomach, the juice will get straight to work in your body without having to share digestion and absorption with anything else.

If you prefer to start your day with lemon water (great habit!), keep doing that. You can even ad a bit of raw honey. Just make sure the lemon water contains nothing other than lemon or lime, water and optional honey. Read more about lemon water here. Anything else: save it until after the celery juice. Drink the celery juice 20, or ideally 30, minutes after the lemon water. And then you eat your breakfast (ideally oatmeal and/or fruits) after.

  • Do not mix with anything!

That means do not mix with anything! No lemon (except for optional lemon water 20-30 minutes prior), no water, no collagen powder, no vinegar, no ice, no supplements, no ‘enhancers’, no ‘boosts’, no other green juices, no nothing. No matter how good you think the thing you want to mix it with is – just don’t. Celery works best all by itself. The effect is less –  or sometimes even destroyed- if you mix it. There is nothing you can add to enhance the effect (no matter who says what!) If you want to do celery juice, do it the right way.

Celery is an herb, one of the few herbs you can consume lots of without it being too strong. Some people feel the need to create their own blend. But when following these instructions, without changing it, you are creating the most potent drink there is. Please remember that herbs are medicinal and when you are preparing, washing and juicing celery you are making an herbal extract in exactly the right way in order to maximize its effect.

  • Wait 20-30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else

Do not take your vitamins or supplements or anything else during this time. Just let the celery juice get to work all on its own. After 20-30 minutes, have your breakfast. Ideally this will be a big bowl of fruits or oatmeal with fruits. If you’re in a hurry, grab a couple of bananas or apples. If it will be a long time until your next meal, you will need a heavier breakfast of course, but try to incorporate fruits into it.

  1. How much to drink?

The recommended amount is 16oz (around 500 ml). But any amount will be beneficial. If you feel good drinking 16oz, that’s great. You can even gradually increase it to 32 oz. But sticking with 16 oz is also amazing. A lot of people have to spend time getting there. So start out with any amount that you are comfortable with, even if it is a teaspoon. Increase gradually as you feel comfortable.

  1. Sticking with the habit

We know lots and lots of people that have been drinking celery juice every morning for years and years. And the list of super models and celebrities doing the same is getting longer and longer each year. The reason they are sticking with the habit is not because it tastes amazing or because of convenience. It is simply because as the months and years pass they feel  the effect more and more. And they simply don’t want to stop. Some feel immediate effects after drinking it on their brain and productivity. Others feel it on their joints, stomach or other.

No matter what, sticking with the habit is key. The road to getting better and getting rid of chronic disease will be bumpy. You will have periods with more symptoms before getting well. Stick with it and hang in there. You can do it!

More effective habits you can find here.

  1. Storage

The celery juice can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. The taste is definitely better right away, and the effect as well. Every hour the juice loses some potency, but still after 24 hours in the fridge it is still definitely worth drinking.

If you have no other option, you can also freeze the juice. It will not be as effective, but it can absolutely be done as a last resort.

Source

So many health gurus and celebrities are recommending celery juice at the moment. So where did this trend actually come from? Celery has been used as a medicinal plant for centuries, but Anthony Williams was the person that told the world about juicing pure celery juice for health benefits. His book Celery Juice will give you even more details. Millions of people follow his protocols for getting rid of disease and the testimonials are unbelievable.

We drink celery juice everyday ourselves, and the list of symptomes we are getting rid of is getting longer every year.

Happy juicing!
